Sarugani is a parish in the diocese of Sarugani located in Madurai-Thondi road south of Tamilnadu. Chronicle records and copper plate engravings reveal that Sarugani was a hub of evangelical and spiritual activities, thanks to the efforts of the foreign missionaries. The Parish is unique in the sense it has the privilege of enjoying the great works of two saintly missionaries. The first parish priest of Sarugani, from the year 1736 – 1774 is Fr.James de rossi, from Italy we call "Chinna Savariar" one of the missionaries. The impact of the work of Fr. De’ Rossi was so powerful, the faith of the people in this area is still strong and the memory of the priest is still fresh. To refresh the spiritual life of the people came another missionary in the year 1956 from France in the form of Spiritual father with the name Fr.Maria Louis Leveil, who transformed the life of the poor and the sick. The unfinished work of these priests is still continued through the successive parish priests. The renewed tomb of Fr.De Rossi and the people of all religions who gather at Sarugani on 21st March, the death anniversary of Fr.Leveil are the manifestations of the faith carried from the period of chinna savariar. The spiritual activities are continued even now in various forms in the parish through pious associations and movements under the present parish priest Fr.C.A.James.
